Erb's Palsy

Erb’s palsy, also known as Erb-Duchenne palsy and Brachial plexus paralysis, is a type of birth defect caused by an injury to the baby’s upper arm nerves during the birthing process. The injury most commonly occurs if a baby’s head and neck are pulled to the side at the same time that the shoulders pass through the birth canal. Some babies who initially suffer from this injury recover over time, while other children will be affected by the injury for the entirety of their adult lives.

The nerve damage associated with Erb’s palsy may cause weakness or paralysis in a child’s arm and shoulder. Depending on the force applied to the baby’s head and neck during the birthing process, the paralysis may be partial or complete. The condition also causes stunted growth and restricted motion in the affected arm and shoulder.

Symptoms of the birth defect include a baby’s inability to move his or her arm, inward turned forearms, and bent wrists. Severe cases may cause a baby’s eyelid to droop on the affected side of the body.

You expect to be able to trust a doctor to deliver your baby without any injuries. If a doctor or medical staff member has caused your baby to suffer birth-related injures, contact a Milwaukee birth injury lawyer right away.
