On Tuesday, June 28, Volkswagen announced a $15 billion settlement regarding the 11 million vehicles affected worldwide by an emissions scandal. The settlement includes almost 10,000 Wisconsin drivers.
In a federal investigation, it was found that the vehicle passed its initial emissions test because special software would trigger a nitrogen oxide trap, which reduced the amount of emissions that left the car. When the cars were no longer in testing and were released to the public, the trap would not work.
Volkswagen is expected to either repair the damaged vehicles or buy them back from their customers for up to $10,000, as well as offer compensation ranging from $5,100 to $10,000.
