Handling of vacant homes under fire as two catch fire in the same week

Out of the three homes destroyed in fires in less than five days, two were vacant. One of the Sherman Park neighborhood house fires occurred on Tuesday, August 16, and the other on Thursday, August 18, which ended up destroying two homes.

Both fires resulted in displacement victims and people are asking what is going to be done about this dangerous trend. Tom Barrett, the Milwaukee mayor, plans to sell them. Only 1,000 of the nearly 4,500 homes are not privately owned and just under renovation. The other properties are designated as abandoned and Barrett has plans to “aggressively try to sell as many properties… as possible.”

The Department of Neighborhood Services is currently working closely with the police department to avoid any further instances. The police are still unsure if the fires are connected to the disturbances from the weekend prior.
