A Westport apartment building is in total ruin following a particularly large fire that broke out early Thursday morning, September 15.
A call regarding the fire was made around 3 a.m. to the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. One building of the eight-unit complex on Westport Road was already entirely covered in flames upon arrival.
“It’s too early to tell what caused the fire,” said Town of Westport fire chief Gary Acker, “It could be smoking materials or faulty equipment, but we don’t know for sure.”
All tenants were evacuated and unharmed. The Red Cross and the Salvation Army have both responded to help any displaced residents, who were given the chance later that same day to salvage any personal belongings.
It’s speculated that the damaged building will need to be demolished, but for now, the fire remains under investigation with no available damage estimate.
