Vehicles manufactured by US auto maker Tesla are also being recalled in the ongoing Takata airbags recall.
Last Friday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released a list of vehicles included in the nationwide auto recall. The list bares 19 vehicle brands including Toyota, Chevrolet, and Nissan. While most of the brands have the most dangerous airbag defects, Tesla’s airbags have the least risks. Defective airbags installed in these vehicles might activate during minor collisions and shoot plastic and metal shrapnel at passengers, which may lead to a passenger’s injury or death.
The Japan-based automotive parts manufacturer Takata is still investigating its airbag inflators, but it says that the cause of airbag defect might be a myriad of factors. Whether it is caused by changes in climate, faulty or poor designs, or excessive moisture is yet to be confirmed.
Currently, a total of 11 deaths and 180 injuries related to defective air bags have been documented, according to the NHTSA.
