Senate Proposal Gets Tough on Auto-Makers

by Administrator 21. June 2010 01:58

Auto executives would face imprisonment and millions of dollars in fines for misleading vehicle-safety regulators under a new bill moving through U.S. Congress.

The new proposal from a Senate committee is in response to issues raised by the massive Toyota Motor Corp. safety recalls. Legislators say that executives need to be held accountable for lapses in safety, and that the new provision would serve as a deterrent, forcing automakers to be more honest about potential defects. Auto-industry officials fear the bill would turn executives into public scapegoats while failing to address the real causes of safety problems.

A provision backed by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John D. Rockefeller (D., W.Va.) would require a company's senior executive in the United States to sign off on all documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as part of a safety probe. The executive would be fined up to $10 million in civl fines for submitting false or misleading information. The executive would also face up to 12 months of jail time.

12 Million Ford Vehicles Recalled

by Administrator 9. September 2008 16:09
Ford drivers should be careful to check whether or not their vehicle is a part of a massive recall initiated by Ford. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration warn that Ford vehicle models listed in the recall should be returned to auto dealers so that the cruise control switch defect can be fixed. According to NHTSA representatives, the cruise control defect may cause fires. The recall covers Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury cars and trucks from the years of 1992 through 2004. An agency spokesperson noted that fires may occur when the autos are being driven or even when they are parked. Sixty people have come forward to report cruise control switch fires from August to February of last year. The repair is simple and it is encouraged that Ford owners carefully check the list of affected vehicles to ensure that they are safe from possible fires. BMW Recalls 150,000 Vehicles

by Administrator 18. August 2008 10:08
BMW has recently announced that it will recall 150,000 vehicles due to a potential airbag defect. According to BMW sources, the defect may prevent the front passenger airbag to operate during a collision. Specifically, the problem has been found in the front passenger airbag seat sensor mat that was installed in a variety of BMW's 2004 through 2006 models in the U.S. and Canadian markets. A report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the airbags might not deploy "even if a sufficiently severe accident would occur." The BMW vehicles involved in the recall include the 2006 3-Series, the 2004-2006 5-Series, and the 2004-2006 X3 Series. BMW reports that it will be sending out letters to its customers beginning in September. If your a loved one has been injured due to a negligently manufactured airbag, contact the Milwaukee defective airbag lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 1-800-242-7205.
