Wisconsin Dog Bite Laws

When a dog bites and attacks a person in Wisconsin, state law holds the dog owner strictly liable for any damages resulting from the injuries that the dog causes to the victim. See Wis. Stat. Sec. 174.02. If a dog owner knew or was notified that his or her dog had previously bitten or attacked a person, the dog owner is liable and responsible for two times the damages (“double damages”) caused to the victim. Damages may include compensation for:
