More about Wausau, Wisconsin

Divided in half by the Wisconsin River, Wausau is the county seat of Marathon County with a population of 39,106 as of the 2010 census. European and American settlers made early trips to and settlements in the area that is now Wausau, as the Erie Canal made it possible to travel from the East Coast to the Wisconsin River. The area saw large numbers of German immigrants early on, but in more recent years, Hmong Americans have become the largest ethnic minority in the area.

Many people live in and visit Wausau for the great outdoors. The city boasts an impressive 37 parks and also offers quick access to Granite Peak Ski Resort—a ski resort featuring 74 runs on a 700 foot mountain that draws large numbers of snowboarders and skiers to the area.

Exhibits at the Center for the Visual Arts and the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum encourage a city dedicated to the arts—even Broadway musicals can be seen here at the historic downtown Grand Theater. Additionally, the Marathon County Historical Museum and the University of Wisconsin at Marathon County serve as two beloved cultural institutions in Wausau.
