A Virginia man was charged with DUI and other charges following an incident in which he crashed his SUV through a barrier and into a police cruiser. The officer in the cruiser was sent to the hospital with various serious injuries. The driver, 35-year-old Stephen Harrison, was charged with reckless driving, driving under the influence of alcohol, and maiming.
The trooper, 38-year-old Troy Smith, had been helping the Virginia Department of Transportation close a bridge so construction could be performed when Harrison crashed his car through a barrier and struck his police cruiser. Smith was then airlifted to VCU Medical Center and was listed as stable with non-life threatening injuries.
