A 19 year-old woman who was injured in a Milwaukee car accident last month has died, according to a Milwaukee County medical examiner’s report released Wednesday.

According to the report, Shamilla e. Sanders died Tuesday at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. Sanders was a passenger in a 1991 Oldsmobile which crashed into a brick pillar outside a Milwaukee hospital last month.

According to officials with the Milwaukee Police Department, Sanders and two of her children were passengers in the Oldsmobile which was driven by Perry L. Wilkerson. Wilkerson was stopped at a red light while driving east on West Burleigh St. shortly after 11:00 p.m. May 10 when the driver of another eastbound vehicle revved the engine as if he wanted to race. Sanders asked Wilkerson not to race, but he did race the other vehicle until he lost control, according to a criminal complaint filed against Wilkerson.

Wilkerson fled the scene of the accident, but was arrested the next day. He was charged with three counts of failing to perform his duty after being involved in a crash that caused great bodily harm. Deputy District Attorney Kent Lovern said Wednesday that prosecutors will review the case to determine if new charges will be filed based upon Sanders’ death.
