Farm vehicle safety tips

Farming remains one of the country’s most dangerous industries, accounting for thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities every year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) stated that in 2011, 243 workers suffer from farm injury resulting in lost work time every day. Unfortunately, the OSHA also stated that in the same year, 570 agricultural workers tragically died due to work-related injuries.

Of the 570 fatalities among agricultural workers, 276 were associated with vehicular accidents. To minimize the likelihood of vehicle-related farm accidents, employees are urged to implement safety measures that protect them and prevent accidents:

  • Farm vehicles traveling on the road should bear a Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) sign
  • Ensure proper vehicle storage (away from fuel storage tanks and livestock housing)
  • When operating the vehicle, do not allow any passenger inside the vehicle and remove persons not involved in the operation from the work site
  • When refueling, shut off the vehicle

The risk of farm injuries and deaths increases when farm machines and equipment are manufactured under inferior standards. If you believe defectively-manufactured farm equipment has caused you harm in Milwaukee, speak with a personal injury attorney at Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. ® to learn if your situation qualifies you for a claim.
