Health complications of Legionnaire’s disease

Posted on November 19, 2014 4:32 pm under Legionnaires' Disease

Facilities such as nursing homes, hotels, hospitals and spas are equipped with water systems for a variety of common but vital tasks. Unfortunately, some property owners and managers are passive in ensuring that water systems are effectively cleaned and maintained to prevent pathogens that may cause serious illnesses. Legionella, for instance, is a type of bacteria that may breed in water systems and cause Legionnaire’s disease – a strain of pneumonia that can cause a myriad of symptoms, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, and cognitive disorders.

Legionnaire’s disease may cause several health complications that could ultimately lead to death if left untreated:

  • Respiratory failure – Compromised lungs may lead to inadequate supply of oxygen to different vital organs, such as the kidneys and the heart
  • Kidney failure – May lead to accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream
  • Septic shock – May lead to multiple organ damage due to poor flow of oxygen-rich blood to different body organs

If you believe a Legionnaires’ outbreak has been the result of negligence, a lawyer at Habush Habush & Rottier S.C. ® can help you investigate further if you are qualified to file for a legal claim against the property owner involved.
