One individual was transported to the hospital with injuries after an explosion occurred at a La Crosse fuel plant yesterday, November 19. According to reports, an explosion occurred in an above ground fuel tank at the Midwest Fuels plant at around 7 am. The explosion, the blast from which was reportedly felt miles away, started a fire that firefighters successfully fought to keep contained to the fuel tank above which the explosion occurred.
To combat the blaze, firefighters poured foam into the fuel tank that held the fire to minimize the risk of it spreading to surrounding fuel tanks, and to keep it from spreading to Hydrite Chemical Co., located next to Midwest Fuels.
Individuals who lived and worked in the area were initially told to stay indoors after the explosion occurred over concerns regarding air quality. That restriction was lifted two hours later.
