The role of GFCIs in ensuring workers safety

Statistical data compiled by the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) revealed that out of the 42,882 workplace fatalities that occurred between 2003 and 2010, 1,738 were recorded to be electricity-related. The ESFI further revealed that the majority of electrical incidents occurred in the construction sector, and mainly involved construction laborers, roofers, electricians and carpenters.

Missing or improper ground protection can cause an electrical accident. For instance, construction sites that do not utilize ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) for all electric receptacles risk electricity-related incidents occurring. GFCIs are sensors that immediately open the circuit when they sense that a current to ground exceeds a certain value, thus preventing the flow of current through the worker’s body. Without proper GFCIs, workers are vulnerable to burns, explosions, and even fatal electrocutions.
