Am I at risk of recto-vaginal fistulas?

Posted on December 15, 2014 4:29 pm under Product Liability

Transvaginal mesh is a net-like implant made of synthetic material used to treat pelvic floor disorders, such as pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence. In some cases, however, transvaginal mesh may displace and erode causing a myriad of health complications, including recto-vaginal fistulas.

Recto-vaginal fistulas are abnormal passages between the rectum and the vagina. Apart from invasive surgeries involving transvaginal implant, there are other possible causes of fistula formation between the rectum and the vagina. Some of them are:

  • Crohn’s disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease
  • Infections in the anus or rectum
  • Diverticulitis, or the formation of bulges along the digestive tract
  • Cancer or radiation treatment involving the pelvic area
  • Long and difficult labor

If you believe your health has been compromised after undergoing a procedure involving transvaginal mesh, do not hesitate to speak with an attorney to learn about the possibility of pursuing justice and compensation through a lawsuit.
