Chrysler recalls Dodge Ram pickups due to rear axle failure

Chrysler is recalling 280,000 units of Dodge Ram pickups manufactured between January 2004 and August 2005, nearly 257,000 of which are in the U.S., due to rear axle failure that might cause injuries and even fatal accidents, The Detroit News reported on December 19.

According to the reports, the rear axle of the affected vehicle might lock up or the driveshaft might detach because of a loosened rear axle pinion nut. The National Highway Traffic safety Administration (NHTSA), which began its probe in July 2012, found 15 incidents of seized up rear-axle or detached driveshaft, two of which resulted in the vehicle spinning out of control.

The automaker said they will begin recalling the affected pickups on February 13.
