Fire hazards in your home might be hiding in unlikely places

Posted on February 7, 2015 12:55 pm under Fires and Explosions

There are appliances in your home that you would not consider likely to catch fire. When defectively designed and manufactured, however, these appliances might fail and cause destructive house fires.

Dishwashers, for instance, have been thought to have a relatively lower risk of fire hazards in homes. However, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned about the risk of dishwasher-related fire hazards in 2012 when General Electric Company recalled its defective GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint dishwashers after electric failures led to seven fires, three of which resulted in destructive property damage.

In 2008, the CPSC also warned about the dangers of fire associated with GE Gas Clothes dryers after learning about a short circuit in the appliance’s electric system that might pose shock, burn, and fire hazard. There were approximately 2,100 affected units.

Appliance-related fire incidents would have not happened if the manufacturer had not neglected to ensure the quality of their products.
