A fatal car crash that happened on Tuesday, February 3, in western Wisconsin killed one exchange student and injured two others, WEAU 13 News reported on February 6.

16-year-old Tim Bekshentayev was an exchange student from Kazakhstan and a hockey player with the Triple-A Northern Wisconsin Blizzard. Together with other teen players, Bekshentayev headed to Grantsburg from the Polk County community of Frederick to meet their other teammates when the driver lost control of the vehicle on Highway 48, careened off the road, and hit a tree. Bekshentayev died during the accident. Meanwhile, details were not immediately available regarding the two other teen players who were reported as injured in the crash.

Authorities have yet to confirm what factors contributed to the accident. The Triple-A Northern Wisconsin Blizzard plans to retire Tim’s jersey at the last game of the regular season.
