Faulty installation of braces may lead to TMJ damage

Posted on April 17, 2015 1:12 pm under Medical Malpractice

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a hinge-type structure at both sides of the jaw that connects it to the skull. When damaged, it can cause severe pain, especially during normal mouth function like speaking and chewing.

Individuals with a TMJ disorder may feel tenderness around the jaw area. Discomfort and pain may also be felt when eating or speaking. The pain around the jaw area may even radiate to the ears and around the whole face. There are often damages associated with TMJ disorders – trauma caused by an accident, jaw infection, arthritis of the jaw, and much more. In some cases, however, TMJ damage can result from an improperly-performed mouth procedure, such as faulty dental implants and tooth extractions.
