Most dangerous types of toys

Posted on April 29, 2015 4:38 pm under Product Liability

Just because children’s toys are designed and manufactured for children doesn’t mean that they are inherently safe. Thousands of children receive emergency medical care due to toy-related incidents every year. Unfortunately, incidents involving children’s toys are sometimes a result of design and manufacturing defects.

A study assessing toy-related injuries from 1990 to 2011 has outlined the type of toys that often cause injuries:

  • Ride-on toy – Accounts for 34.9% of children’s injuries. These include tricycles, wagons, scooters and bicycles.
  • Recreational equipment – Accounts for 9.9% of injuries. Includes swings, slides and other amusement equipment for children.
  • Practice play – Accounts for 6.1% of injuries. These include early exploratory toys such as building sets and blocks.
  • Toy weapon – Accounts for 3.4% of injuries and includes toy guns, etc.
  • Media play – Accounts for 2.9% of child injuries.
  • Pretend and role play – Accounts for 2.0% of child injuries
