Reports of injurious falls prompt IKEA to recall safety gates

IKEA recalls 58,000 of its PATRULL KLAMMA and PATRULL SMIDIG pressure-mounted safety gates after receiving reports from around the world that the friction between the gates and the door frame might not be enough to hold the gate in place, causing the risk of falls, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported on May 12.

Safety gates with the following article numbers printed at the bottom of the products are covered by the recall: 302-265-21, 500-375-67, 501-919-50, 655-517-10,700-989-65, and 901-136-01. The recalled products were sold between August 1995 and February 2015 at different IKEA stores nationwide. The company learned about the issue after receiving 18 reports worldwide of gates not being able to hold their positions, three of which resulted in kids becoming injured after falling down stairs.

Affected consumers are asked to return the defective products to the nearest IKEA store for a full refund.
