Anesthesia deaths on the rise worldwide

With state-of-the-art technology and better medical training, the error rate in administering general anesthesia is far better than during the ’40s and ’60s. However, a report by Time suggested that despite decades of decline, the worldwide rate of anesthesia-related deaths is again on the rise.

In a study published in the German Medical Association’s official international science journal Deutsches Ärzteblatt, researchers found that about seven patients in every million receiving full anesthesia worldwide die from anesthesia-related causes. Also, the global death rate within a year after the administration of general anesthesia is 1 in 10 for older patients aged 65 and above.

Although Time said the higher anesthesia death rate is due to the fact that more and more older patients are undergoing surgeries, poor anesthesiological care could still be among its causes.
