Severe complications of bedsores

Posted on May 28, 2015 2:07 pm under Nursing Home Abuse

Bedsores are never a minor nursing home issue. When left unmanaged, these wounds may cause complications that can severely impact a patient’s quality of life, and may sometimes even result in death. Below are just some of the many serious complications associated with bedsores:

  • Gangrene – Occurs when a large portion of the affected tissue is dead. Gangrene sometimes require debridement, or the surgical removal of the dead tissue.
  • Sepsis – Happens when the infection reaches the blood stream.
  • Infections of the bones/joints – Because pressure sores often occur on the surface of the skin that covers the bones, bacteria from the wound may dig deep down into the joints and bones, causing infection.
  • Cellulitis – A potentially fatal skin disorder that happens when the skin and its connective tissues have become infected.

Unfortunately, elderly patients of negligent nursing homes are at a higher risk of developing bedsores and their complications.
