Treatment options for bedsores

Bedsores or pressure sores may result in further health complications that may ultimately lead to death when left untreated. As such, bedridden seniors in nursing homes should be treated at once after bedsore detection to prevent any adverse health complication.

Bedsores should be cleaned and dressed regularly to promote faster healing and avoid infection. In advanced cases, doctors may suggest medications to fight against symptoms. Pain killers, for instance, can be used to relieve the tenderness of the skin, while a topical or oral antibiotic can be prescribed for bacterial infection. In cases where pressure wounds don’t respond to any intervention, debridement – the surgical removal of the diseased body part – may be required. The affected area of the skin will be removed; the wound will then be coated with a patch of skin, muscles and tissues, allowing it to grow and cover the bones.
