Bedsore prevention tips

Bedsores, or wounds caused by prolonged pressure or friction on the surface of the skin, affect many seniors residing in long term care facilities across the country. Unfortunately, untreated bedsores may invite further health complications, and may sometimes even result in death.

However, bedsores are completely preventable with proper attention and care. Apart from regularly changing the position of a bedridden patient, here are some tips you may want to consider to prevent bedsores:

  • Select mattresses and cushions that are designed to alleviate pressure, especially in vulnerable areas. These may include water foam and air-filled mattresses, among many other options.
  • Keep the patient hydrated and healthy to make his or her skin less prone to pressure sores.
  • For less immobile patients, teaching them how to shift their weight or change position would help relieve skin pressure. Pull-up ropes and side bars may also help senior patients change their positions regularly.

Bedsores could be an indication that your elderly loved one is suffering from nursing home neglect and abuse.
