Am I at risk of E. coli complications?

Posted on June 3, 2015 11:15 am under Premises Liability

E. coli enteritis refers to the inflammation of the intestines due to exposure to harmful E. coli bacteria, which can be found mostly in contaminated water and food items. Anyone exposed to the bacteria may develop E. coli enteritis signs and symptoms, which include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and vomiting.

Healthy people usually recover from E. coli enteritis after a couple of days’ rest. However, individuals with the following conditions are at higher risk of developing complications associated with the disease:

  • Individuals with weakened immune system, such as those suffering from HIV or other medical conditions
  • Medications and/or medical conditions that lower the level of acid in the stomach
  • Younger children and older adults
