Baxter recalls its vascular patches over the risky side effects

Posted on June 3, 2015 2:38 pm under Product Liability

Baxter International Inc. is recalling certain lot numbers of VASCU-GUARD Peripheral Vascular Patch over risk of life-threatening vessel thrombosis or embolism, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reported on June 1.

The company received complaints from customers that they were having difficulty distinguishing the smooth from rough side of the patch. When used with the rough side facing the bloodstream, the product may cause blood clots, increasing the risk of stroke, among other life-threatening medical complications. Four product codes are covered by the recall: 1504026 (VASCU-GUARD TS 1x6cm), 1504028 (VASCU-GUARD TS 0.8x8cm), 1504030 (VASCU-GUARD TS 1x10cm), and 1504032 (VASCU-GUARD TS 2x9cm).

VASCU-GUARD Peripheral Vascular Patches are used for blood vessel reconstruction. To date, Baxter has been receiving reports of stroke and thrombosis when the affected products were used.
