Medical conditions that can make your pregnancy high risk

Posted on June 29, 2015 11:21 am under Medical Malpractice

A report by the Washington Post revealed that in 2013, 18.5 in every 100,000 mothers died in childbirth. The risk of maternal death is even greater among mothers whose pregnancy is considered high risk. Apart from maternal age, a pregnancy is considered high risk if the mother is suffering from one or more of these medical conditions:

  • Diabetes – High levels of blood glucose may cause a birth defect
  • Hypertension – Increases the risk of kidney disorder in mothers and low birth weight in infants
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome – Increases the risk of miscarriage
  • Thyroid disorders – May cause mothers to develop hypertension and babies to develop heart failure and low birth weight
  • Obesity – Increases a mother’s risk of diabetes, which may cause birth defects
