Treatment options for PTSD: Psychotherapy

Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a serious medical condition that may cause a host of different complications, ranging from anxiety and depression to suicidal thoughts. With early detection and treatment, individuals with PTSD may improve their symptoms and recover their sense of control.

One primary treatment for PTSD is psychotherapy. This treatment may include one or more of the following:

  • Exposure therapy – this treatment exposes the victim to his or her fears in a safe environment, helping the individual control them efficiently
  • Cognitive therapy – oftentimes used in tandem with exposure therapy, cognitive therapy is a way of restructuring how the patient thinks about the traumatic event
  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing – involves the use of eye movements to water down emotionally charged memories

People who have developed PTSD have to deal not only with their medical situation, but also with the financial burden that goes along with it.
