Injury reports prompt recall of pedal axle extenders

Posted on July 15, 2015 12:29 pm under Bicycle Accidents

Approximately 6,500 Specialized Body Geometry Pedal Axle Extenders are being recalled after reports were received that the pedal axle extenders might detach, causing the cyclist to lose control of the bicycle and crash, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) revealed on July 15.

The affected stainless steel pedal axles are mounted in a 9/16 inch pedal thread that extends the pedals’ outward reach. Axles are labeled L and R, and were sold in pairs between January 2009 and June 2015 at authorized Specialized retail outlets nationwide and online at www.specialized.com. To date, the company received 10 reports of axle detachment, two of which resulted in minor injuries.

Bicycle accidents happen for a host of different factors. Unfortunately, a significant number of them happen due to defective bicycle components.
