On October 7, Cook Medical voluntarily recalled several sizes of their Beacon® Tip Angiographic Catheters due to their tendency to separate or split. This defect often leads to the loss of the product’s efficacy. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the malfunction may require medical intervention in order to retrieve the separated segment in order to prevent the obstruction of blood flow to bodily organs.
The product was distributed globally between September 2012 and September 2015. A list of the recalled model sizes is available on the FDA’s website.
Cook Medical alerted customers and distributors through mailed letters. Consumers who are in possession of this product are advised to discontinue use and return them to the company in exchange for credit.
