Bed Handles Inc. has had to make a second announcement of the recall of their adult portable bed handles after a fourth case of death was reported. The product was already recalled due to cases of the bed handle moving out of place, which created a gap between the handle and the side of the mattress, posing entrapment and strangulation hazards. After the first announcement, less than one percent of consumers responded. The second announcement is an attempt to draw more attention to this issue.
It was recently reported that a 90-year-old woman from a senior care facility in California’s Castro Valley died after she became trapped in the gap between the mattress of her bed and its handle. Hers is the fourth death related to the issue to be reported.
The recalled products were sold from 1994 to 2007, and the list of included models can be found on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s website.
Anyone in possession of this product is advised to immediately stop their use of the bed handles. The manufacturer urges customers to contact them for free safety retention straps to secure the handle.
