A 22-year-old man from Racine died on Wednesday, November 4th after the car his half-brother was driving crashed with an SUV. According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, the 23-year-old brother of the victim was driving a Dodge Neon sedan near the intersection of 16th Street and Highway 31 at around 8:00 in the evening when the accident occurred. The driver apparently failed to yield while making a left turn into oncoming traffic.
Authorities said that the victim died before the emergency response team arrived. The victim’s brother was taken to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints Hospital after sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. The SUV’s driver was uninjured.
Although the driver of the Neon was unable to submit to a field sobriety test, two officers smelled alcohol on his person after responding to the crash. Additional signs of intoxication were present in the driver while he was being treated at the hospital after the collision.
The victim’s brother has been charged by Racine County with homicide by operation of vehicle while under the influence. He is being held at the jail with a $50,000 bail and faces up to 17 years in prison if convicted.
