Local emergency response officials are calling for the installation of cables on Wisconsin’s Highway 16 to prevent cars from crossing over the median into oncoming traffic. This request comes after a fatal accident on the highway on Sunday left two dead after one a Chevrolet Malibu lost control and veered over the median, crashing head on into a Dodge Caravan. A third individual driving a Chevrolet Blazer did not see the Caravan and hit the vehicle. The two victims have been identified as Kent Girmscheid and Joann Elertson, while the others involved in the accident were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
This accident comes just two years after another fatal accident on Highway 16 of the same nature left two dead and a young child seriously injured in 2013. After these incidents, officials are looking to have cables installed, citing the decrease of accidents on a nearby road with the cables. Officials say these two accidents are among numerous cross-over accidents that they have responded to on the highway.
