On December 11, a 56-year-old volunteer firefighter sustained critical injuries after a vehicle struck him while he was attending to a prior crash on U.S. Interstate 39 near Endeavor in Marquette County. According to the authorities, a southbound vehicle on I-39 was driving towards the accident scene when the driver failed to notice the fire truck parked in the road. The driver swerved to avoid colliding with the truck and instead struck the firefighter standing beside it.

Reports said that the 56-year-old man was part of the team of first responders in a prior crash that involved a driver who needed immediate medical attention. The firefighter was initially flown to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage but was then transported to the Trauma Center at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, where he passed away.

There were no reports on possible charges for the driver, but the crash is still under the investigation of Wisconsin State Patrol and Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.
