A volunteer firefighter was killed when he was struck by a vehicle during the course of tending to a single vehicle accident on Friday, December 11. Lawrence Millard, 56, was directing traffic on I-39 after being called to respond to an accident in the median of the road. A driver in the southbound lane failed to notice the fire truck in enough time to stop his vehicle, and struck Millard during an attempt to avoid a collision with the emergency vehicle.

After being struck by the driver, Millard was airlifted to Divine Savior Hospital and later to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. It was at the University hospital where he succumbed to the injuries he sustained.

The Wisconsin State Patrol has assumed control of the situation and is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the accident in an effort to determine the cause. No word has been issued yet regarding any potential charges the driver may face.
