On December 11, Roadracing World reported that a safety recall was issued by Yamaha Motor Corp., USA, citing that the manufacturer sent out letters to the registered owners of the 2015 YZF-R1 motorcycle due to the discovery of a defect in the motorbike’s six-speed manual transmission.
The recalled motorbike’s second gear wheel and pinion gears could possibly break if improperly shifted or when experiencing high stress. The fault is believed to be caused by the insufficient component strength and stress concentration at the bottom land of the gear teeth, according to the report. The third and fourth gears may possibly deform or break from hard usage and high stress. The transmission may lock up and lead to loss of control, resulting in a crash.
Yamaha advised not to use the motorbike and distributed letters to the registered owners, stating that they may contact an authorized Yamaha dealer for a transmission replacement, free of charge.
