Living Tree Community Foods announced a recall of its Organic Macadamia Nuts and Organic Macadamia Butter due to the possible presence of Salmonella, according to a press release issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on February 5. At this time, there have been no associated illnesses reported.

Salmonella, a group of bacteria that causes illness, is highly dangerous to individuals with weak immune systems. It can also be fatal to the elderly and young children. Nausea, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, and bloody diarrhea are just some of the symptoms associated with the infection of Salmonella. Arthritis, endocarditis, and arterial problems like aneurysm are among the long term effects of this bacterial infection.

The FDA found the contamination after a test with the company’s supplier, Mahina Mele. The company’s production of macadamia products has been suspended until investigation reveals the source of the Salmonella.
