The results of a recent study suggested that medical errors are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., potentially third only to cardiovascular diseases and cancer. In a study conducted by Doctors Martin Makary and Michael Daniel of Johns Hopkins, it was found that approximately 251,454 patients die every year from various medical errors.
The recorded fatalities do not include those that take place at nursing homes or in the patient’s home. Records of fatal medical errors are often inaccurate, since death certificates do not have a sufficient way to indicate a medical error, Dr. Makary noted. Though Dr. Makary admitted medical errors are likely to happen, since doctors are also humans, he suggests that medical professionals should reform the system to prioritize patient safety.
