Millions of vehicles with Takata airbags recalled by 8 car companies

Posted on May 27, 2016 11:39 am under Automotive Defects

Over 12 million vehicles with Takata airbags are under recall by eight car manufacturers in the U.S. as part of a larger recall by the Japanese company. Vehicle companies Fiat Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Mazda, Ferrari, Subaru, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are expected to replace the defective Takata air bag inflators currently installed in many of their vehicles.

Especially in warm regions with increased humidity, the chemical ammonium nitrate used in the air bag can deteriorate, causing a metal canister to blow apart and shoot fragments of hot metal if the air bag deploys. The automakers voluntarily expanded their recall after Takata announced another wave of recalls linked to at least 11 fatalities and over 100 injuries.
