A 21-year-old Shawn Graika of Greenfield was charged on Monday, June 20 with one felony count of homicide due to negligent driving. Graika’s negligence reportedly resulted in a crash that killed 65-year-old Oscar Balli of Milwaukee along S. 76th St. on Sunday, April 17.
An investigation revealed that Balli’s vehicle was pulling out of the parking lot of a Barnes ‘n Noble store north of Edgerton Ave. when the accident occurred. The striking vehicle, driven by Graika, was headed southbound on S. 76th Street when it struck the victim’s vehicle. Police say Balli was trapped in his vehicle with significant injuries and he was taken to Froedtert Hospital once he was extricated. Balli died in the hospital, but Graika suffered only minor injuries. Graika told police “he believed he was going 45 miles per hour” at the time of the crash, but a collision analysis revealed Graika was traveling 73 miles per hour (over double the speed limit) before the crash.
