Single Lightning Strike Causes Fire at Two Homes

Posted on July 1, 2016 6:03 pm under Fires and Explosions

On Sunday, June 26 at 6:30 am, Jenny Dempsey heard a noise that shook her home off Fox River Parkway in Waukesha. “My daughter described it as dynamite,” she said.

When the Dempsey family rushed outside, they noticed burn marks on a large maple tree behind their house. There was a small fire on the side of their neighbor’s home that caused their home to catch fire as well. Lt. Dan Berghoefer of the Waukesha Fire Department believes the strike traveled through the tree, into the ground, and through underground connections between the two homes. The fire inside the Dempsey’s home was electrical.  “It’s very rare,” he says. “In my career I’ve only ever seen lightning impact a large area a couple of times.” Nobody was injured in the incident, but the Dempsey’s home sustained serious damage to the bedrooms, bathroom, and drywall.
