The Ellison Bay community is recalling a horrific explosion caused by a propane gas leak 10 years ago, a July 8 article of Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. The explosion killed two people and caused injuries to 12 more.

Ellison Bay resident Pete Moegenburg told reporters that he assumed the explosion near Pioneer Store was just a loud thunderclap when it woke him on the early morning of July 10, 2006. The explosion, which took place around 2:00 a.m., killed a couple from Michigan and caused injuries to 12 people, including children. The injured children were awarded compensation of over $21 million in 2008 because of the injuries they sustained as a result of the accident. Another resident, Gary Kurtz, recounted his experience from the blast. Kurtz was on the phone with his wife, who was at their home near Pioneer at the time. Kurtz’ wife and other residents were evacuated by fire crews after the blast.
