An elderly man from Illinois has died in a single-car accident, during which he accidentally drove his car into a flooded ditch.

County Road M had been blocked after severe storms in northern Wisconsin, as washout flooded several roads. The driver of the car, an 84-year-old man from Tower Lakes, Illinois, had been trying to turn his car around, away from the blockage, and he backed into the flooded ditch. The driver drowned but his passenger was successfully pulled from the vehicle by a volunteer firefighter. Investigation of the accident is underway and led by the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office.
