An early morning explosion followed by a fire took place in a large commercial building in Cranmoor.

Local firefighters were dispatched to the 3864 block of Searles Road after receiving a report of an explosion at approximately 3:39 a.m. When they arrived, the building, which is a combination of maintenance shop and a warehouse, was already engulfed in flames.

Initial investigations show that the fire started in the maintenance shop and spread throughout the building. Investigators later recovered an acetylene torch, LP gas cylinders, fork lifts, and fuels from the building which, according to firefighters, exploded, contributing to the blaze.

How the fire began remains unknown, but it was determined that two thirds of the 4,900 square foot building were damaged by the fire. The warehouse part of the building sustained minimal damage.
