A tragic single-vehicle collision took place on County Highway U just east of Elderberry Lane on January 3. Local authorities responded to the area after receiving a report of a serious injury crash at approximately 7:00 a.m.
According to the report, a pickup truck was traveling along the westbound lane of County Highway U when it encountered black ice. The truck spun out of control, veered off the roadway, and continued on to the south ditch. It then crashed into trees before coming to a complete stop. The impact of the crash ejected the driver from the vehicle, killing her in the process. She was later identified as 16-year-old Jodeen Hinz. Another occupant of the vehicle was not injured.
Investigators were called to the scene to determine the cause of crash when they determined the victims were on their way to Plymouth High School.
