Kenosha is the fourth largest city in Wisconsin with a population of 99,899 (as of July 2013) and serves as the county seat for Kenosha County. In addition to a number of city and county parks, the city has eight miles of shoreline on Lake Michigan. Located on this shoreline is one of the area’s most immediately recognizable landmarks, the Kenosha North Pier Light. This red tower lighthouse was built in 1906 and is accessible from the beach at Simmons Island.
The city also boasts a number of rich cultural institutions, including three Smithsonian Institution affiliate museums: the Kenosha Public Museum, the Civil War Museum, and the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. All three of these incredible facilities are conveniently located in Kenosha’s downtown.
Kenosha also is home to several important institutions of higher education, including the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, with an enrollment of more than 5,000 students, and Carthage College, which has more than 2,500 students.
