Your work with organizations like Centro Hispano gives you firsthand insight into the barriers underserved communities face. How has that experience shaped your approach to advocating for clients?
It takes courage to ask for help. I try to remember that every time I talk to a potential new client. They had to overcome all kinds of obstacles before even reaching me. Lawyers need to remember that the legal system is comfortable space for us, but it is a stressful and scary place for everyone else.
What is one piece of legal advice you think everyone should know after being injured in an accident?
Slow down. You’re going to be facing a ton of challenges and headaches. You might need to find a new car, you might have to deal with a difficult boss who wants you back to work too soon. Do your best to put yourself first, and do what’s best for you. You’re going to need time to heal. You’re going to need time to figure out exactly what your long term damages are. Don’t rush it. Talk to your friends and family, and find a lawyer that is going to work for YOU, and not just rush your case through.
How do you see the personal injury law landscape evolving over the next 5–10 years?
The laws in the personal injury world are always changing. Sometimes a statute of limitations, or deadline, gets shortened. Sometimes caps are put on certain types of damages. I expect changes to keep happening, and to happen at an even quicker pace. That’s why it is so important to hire a lawyer who specializes in personal injury law. There are just too many details that can get missed if an attorney is not an expert in this area.
What motivates you most in your work as a personal injury lawyer?
I help individuals, sometimes through one of the worst times of their life. It means a lot to me knowing that I’m there to be a trusted resource, and get people past an otherwise terrible time.
