  3. Milwaukee woman awarded over $25 million in malpractice case

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel recently reported on the verdict of a notable medical malpractice case, in which Ascaris Mayo, 53, was awarded $25.3 million after losing all four of her limbs at Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital.

Mayo, a mother of four, visited Columbia St. Mary’s in 2011 suffering from serious abdominal pain and fever. The presiding physicians did not properly identify her medical condition in time, suggesting it was a fibroid issue instead of a Strep A infection, which lead to Mayo going into septic shock.

Though her infection was stopped, Dr. Wyatt Jaffe and his assistant Donald Gibson failed to offer Mayo alternative diagnoses prior to treating her condition by amputating all four of her limbs. Attorney Daniel Rottier has represented Mayo throughout the legal process and mentioned that, had she been presented with other options before undergoing this drastic procedure, she would have sought other treatments.
