You’ve dedicated your practice to representing injured clients across a wide range of accident types. What led you to focus on personal injury litigation?

It is essential that clients who have been injured in accidents receive the strongest legal representation possible. Their lives are immediately and significantly disrupted — from property damage issues, to seeking medical care, to managing expenses, lost wages, and the physical and emotional challenges of their injuries.
Helping clients navigate these hardships and begin rebuilding financially, physically, and emotionally is incredibly meaningful. The professional satisfaction of guiding injured clients through that recovery process is what makes practicing personal injury law so rewarding.

You teach Trial Advocacy at the University of Wisconsin Law School and frequently write and present on trial practice. What is one principle you consistently emphasize to your students when preparing a case for trial?

Trial preparation begins at the very first client meeting. A lawyer’s responsibility is to fully understand the client’s circumstances, thoroughly investigate and evaluate their losses, and develop a strategy to present their case effectively to a jury.
Knowing the client, understanding their damages, and building a plan to clearly and persuasively prove their case are fundamental responsibilities of an effective trial lawyer.

What is the biggest misconception people have about personal injury law, and how do you address it with clients?

One of the most common misconceptions is underestimating the complexity of a personal injury case. Clients often don’t realize how much work goes into identifying legal issues, investigating facts, proving damages and losses, and ultimately resolving a claim.
That’s why it is critical to have an experienced, dedicated advocate whose sole focus is representing the client’s best interests. Choosing a lawyer and firm with a proven record of protecting their rights and guiding them through the recovery process is one of the most important decisions an injured person can make.
